Hey all, I was saving up to get a few notes from Portugal. I was able to get 4 to add to my collection.

So here is the first.




This was the highest denomination ever issued by Portugal. The 10,000$00 escudos was worth about $75 USD when released and $50 Euro at the time of the Euro.

This is part of the navigator series and features the Infante Dom Henriques. Or Prince Henry the Navigator. The note is Pick 191 B and features the signatures of: António Jose Fernandes de Sousa & Luís Manuel Moreira de Campos e Cunha

The reverse of the note features a stanza from the Portuguese Poet Fernando Pessoa "Mar Portuguez" or Sea of the Portuguese

"Deus quer, o homem sonha, a obra nasce. 
Deus quis que a terra fosse toda uma, 
Que o mar unisse, já não separasse. 
Sagrou-te, e foste desvendando a espuma "

In English:

"God wants, man dreams, the work is born.
God wanted the earth to be all one,
May the sea unite, no longer separate.
He consecrated you, and you were unveiling the foam"

Today's note is P190 (a) with the signatures: António Jose Fernandes de Sousa & António Manuel Martins Pereira Marta

The note features Vasco Da Gama who was a Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea.

His initial voyage to India by way of Cape of Good Hope (1497-1499) was the first to link Europe and Asia by an ocean route, connecting the Atlantic and the Indian oceans. This is widely considered a milestone in world history, as it marked the beginning of a sea-based phase of global multiculturalism. Da Gama's discovery of the sea route to India opened the way for an age of global imperialism and enabled the Portuguese to establish a long-lasting colonial empire along the way from Africa to Asia.

Latest addition to my NZ collection

A friend who owns a local shop had this out of circulation note tendered at the till, and passed it on to me at face. Its an old NZ $10 paper note from 1993-1999 - P182 BLUE BACK. Serial EC081548. D.T.Brash
(The original paper note started life with a green back in 1993)

Fifth series (1993-1999)
New Zealand's banknotes were completely re-designed in the 1990s to introduce uniquely New Zealand designs. Kate Sheppard, the most famous New Zealand suffragette, was now on the front of the ten-dollar note, next to a white camellia, a symbol for universal suffrage in New Zealand. A whoi blue duck, an endangered species of New Zealand bird, is on the back. Between the portrait and the camellia is a map of New Zealand.

Today's note is a classic 50 Escudos from 1941 (11/25/1942) P154 with the signatures of: Carlos de Barros Soares Branco & João da Motta Gomes Júnior.

The front features Ramalho Ortigão, who was a Portuguese writer of the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The reverse features Leça do Balio monastery which is a religious complex located in Matosinhos, close to Porto, in the Northern part of Portugal. It features a fortified church with a defensive tower.

@LongBeard, that's quite an interesting example you have there. While I've seen a lot of U.S. and world notes with cancelled stamps to mark various events, I've never seen one quite like that...

I also have the 5000 Vasco de Gama - although 1997 issue.

Portugal produce some splendid notes and I also have the 1000 Escudos from 1998, and 100 Escudos from 1984. Hoping to get more.
