Generally the cash handling services (which what most people see are the armoured car side of it) have there own reserves of coin and cash upon which they use to service the various banks. When these reserves run low, they order coin and cash from the Fed. If they feel they have to much coin or cash they deposit it in the Fed. Most cash services (such as brinks) here in the east get their coin from banks that have coin counting machines. With the bad economy more and more coins are being returned to the cash services and less and less ordered from the fed. Since the current coin supply at the fed is sufficent to meet the demand for orders, the mint is recieving less coin orders hence last years lower than normal mintages.

So I may just get lucky as $1000 in halves I'm getting are coming from Brinks...The other $1000 are coming from String and Sons. I know from talking to the tellers that nobody in my town that uses those banks orders halves, so I guess we will see how many in other towns that are serviced by the same handling service office seaqrch halves. Perhaps I will just try to hold onto them a bit and place another order for the same amount from each bank, just to dig into the pile a bit too see what is available in there. The big problem is, that may also explain why I haven't had much luck with silver in brinks rolls.....perhaps the silver that some are attempting to deposit is getting kicked out of the machines into the reject bin.
that's ok....if the halves deal ends up being dry I'm just going to order $5 boxes of nickels from each place......I LLLUUUUUVVVVVV looking thru nickels. They won't make me rich, but I enjoy it as a hobby - it all turns to work sometimes when you feel you have to find some good stuff. If you approach it in the hobby fashion the only headache becomes the dirty looks you get when you dump large amounts of coin at the same bank all the time.
excuse the ramble.
