I was about to bid on this item on ebay today, though decided against it. Something about the coin didn't feel right, I'm thinking it might have been cleaned; take a look at the white grime in the "9" and some of the letters on the obverse. I'm guessing $88 is a good price if it actually is MS63, and not cleaned.

From the pictures provided, I do not believe that this coin is uncirculated. I have seen many PCI coins that I felt were not graded accurately. The company seems to be better now than it used to be, but I don't know when this coin was graded.

I also feel that the area in the 9 and other devices could be residue of some kind, probably from cleaning. The toning could be quite attractive. I'm pretty sure the image in this auction are scans, not digital photographs. That would make the toning appear more gray and not show the colors well if it is rainbow.

All in all, I would not have paid more than $50 for this coin. Even then, I would be choosing to take a chance that this coin is much more attractive than in the images.
Rest in Peace

I thought that the green labels were when PCI was more conservative. Maybe I have it backwards. Either way, I don't think the picture is good enough to see whether or not the coin was graded accurately, but it could have been a steal.

Yes, but....there were a couple generations of the old green slabs. The original generation used a Futura-style typeface; later versions used a different style and, with new ownership, less-stringent grading. Here's the "original" PCI label:

The auction linked here is for an original PCI slab. Like Susan, I have my reservations about the coin. Unlike her, though, I'd have risked $90 on it.

My 7070 has only 3 holes filled, so I always have my eye out for U.S. coins. I hope I didn't mistake reflections from the coin/slab being scanned, for white-ish grime/residue.

I think it's time I grab a RedBook... :)
