I dunno, but I sure do like the seller's description. (He must be a politician).

In that case, it sounds like a great deal. The buyer could become pseudo famous as being the 'discoverer' of such a rarity. I wish it was a Buy It Now type of auction.

Yeah, I do believe that you are correct mdh, present day man's knowledge of the Carson City Mint's earliest coinage only dates back to 1870, so finding a coin in this condition in a box in your room would be on heck of a find and set the numismatic world on it's ear.
Wow, rest assured, 'I' will be right there sniping at the end, so just a word of warning everyone, "Go big, or stay at home" !!

that has got to be the most ugly piece of crap I have ever seen! Maybe it's a comic relief joke or maybe it's just a plain old money grab shyster!

Are you suggesting the possibility that it may not be authentic?
Hmmm...maybe I had better reconsider my max bid then.

The 'CC' mintmark is just one of the obvious clues. That "In God We Trust" motto on the reverse didn't show up until 1866.

It might be a super rare one of a kind trial piece like my Trade dollar. Just because there wasn't a mint in Carson City on that date and just because "other" coins didn't use "In God We Trust" until 1866 doesn't mean some bored engraver at one of the other mints didn't have a vision for the future. I'll be sure to be sniping away at the last second with all the rest of you for the rare opportunity to add a gem like this to my collection!

I think it's a Fake! The motto, "In God We Trust" didn't appear until 1866.

Quote: It might be a super rare one of a kind trial piece like my Trade dollar. The 1797CC Trade dollars are very popular fake coins minted in China. Thus, it is even not a rare fake coin.

What do you mean not rare, it's the only one I have and it cost me a dollar!!
By the way, I thought the CC on these early type coins stood for "Chinese Copy"!

Since Carson City didn't exist before 1858, both of these coins are especially rare.
You might say they're prophetic.
