Hello -

Attached is a recent acqusition of a Talbot Allum & Lee Cent.

Though grades are somewhat subjective, opinions as to grade is most appreciated.

(As I am new to this forum, please advise if indeed this is the wrong forum for this coin.)

Thanks, kindly.

All I know about these is that they were sometimes trimmed down and used as planchets for striking US Half Cent coins.

Your pictures are dark but this coin looks better to me than the other Colonials you have posted. The surfaces appear free of any serious corrosion and the details are pretty sharp. Gradewise, maybe VF-25?

Do you know what caused those light streaks on the obverse?

Hi Jaobler -

I do not know what caused the light streaks on the obverse. The coin was purchased with them, and I believe the seller merely flipped it and would not know as to the cause. Other than color, the streaks do not appear to have any bearing on wear or condition at the places they appear.

Thanks for your input as to grade. I do appreciate it.

Your coin does not look right to me. The below pictures are from Whitman colonial coin guide.

Hi dollarcoins -

Thanks for the follow-up.

I followed up and consulted Whitmans(2009) and Breen's. Per all the various photos and illustrations within both books, above the right mast, below the flag, there should be a rope affixed to the left of the mast (as there is pictured to the right). My specimen does not.

That said, along the [rim] edge of said specimen, there is a legend that states: "PAYABLE AT THE STORE OF"...
