Pretty new at the VAM business, but this looks like a VAM 132 Missing Nostril. It does not show up very well in the pics, but there is a clear break in the nostril; what do you think? Also, the one in the date looks high and appears cracked in the upper right side. Thanks!

Probably VAM 190 since 132 is not known to exist.

jprine,

Check the 'D' in dollar on the reverse. If the bottom is broken or weak, then it's a VAM 190.

A note to those posting for VAM attribution. As a minimum you should post a picture of the entire obverse and reverse, then close-ups of key areas. I can usually attribute just about any 1878-P in less than a minute with a good picture of the obv and rev. Thanks.

SeatedNut-here are the pics, such as they are. I am still learning how to take pics of my coins, not doing very well as you can tell. Anyway, any ideas will be appreciated.

jprine,

You have a VAM 190. Here's a blow-up of the 'D' in DOLLAR. Note the incomplete lower part.

As far as your pictures: The color balance appears good, but your lighting is a bit strong and washes out the details. Try shooting on Manual and close down the aperature/increase the shutter speed to decrease the exposure a bit. Different types of lighting are discussed at length in the photography forum.

Thanks SeatedNut. I wish I would have not started looking at vams-I have far too many projects going; but it is lots of fun. I really need to work on my photography, I try to keep up with the threads as much as possible. The really lustrous coins are problematic. Thanks Again!
