I won this 1892 Barber Half on ebay last night. I have been searching for a decent AU to upgrade the VF-20 already in my 7070. These are the sellers pics. It was sold as an AU-50. Based on the wear I think I agree - what do you think? Although I can't rule out cleaning, it does seem to retain some luster, and there is a carbon spot on the reverse. I got it at a pretty good price, I just hope it goes in the 7070, rather than being returned like the last two I bought.

Looks like a very nice coin, from what I can make out from the pictures I'd say at least AU-50. Would lie to see better pictures once you receive the coin, it might be higher. Doesn't look cleaned.

Thanks. It has always been interesting to me that it is easier and often less expensive, to find an AU Seated Liberty Half or even a Bust Half, than a decent AU Barber. The ones that are out there have so many problems, not the least of which is over cleaning. Guess not much of this series was saved back by collectors.

I think it is nice. Nothing I see indicates cleaning I think it has alot of luster for just au I might go as high as AU55. The carbon spot may bump you down a notch though...

I know what you mean it is dificult to find the nice Barber halves. I think more people saved the Seated and Bust coins because the public seemed to like the design much more than the barber. When they first released the public was dissapointed and though the coin was ugly and poorly designed thus more got thrown into heavy circulation and much fewer coins were saved.

You can also get many Seated halves for lees $$$ than a XF or AU barber due to the above statement.
