I am looking to start a collection of these. What years did they span?

I believe the 1721 and 1722 are the desirable ones. I don't know a whole lot about these coins. Here is some background:

I am almost positive that is not a US colonial coin, especially considering that New York was a state in 1792. VOC is the Dutch East India Company(Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) which operated in Asia. From what I can tell, Numismaster lists that design as being minted from 1771-1806

Biokhemist is correct, these are not US colonials and actually have almost nothing to do with the US. SOME of these have been found in excavations in the US and the Dutch West Indies, but only because trade takes place all over the world so some coins intended for one area can be foun in another. These coins were intended for circulation on the other side of the world in the area that is now Indonesia. The problem is most people know New York was settled by the Dutch, and they can't be bothered to differentiate Dutch EAST Indies from Dutch WEST Indies (The Dutch were also forced out of the New York area by the end of the 17th century, almost 80 years before these coins were made.) But it seems like EVERYONE on ebay tries to pass these off as New York colonials.

i had thought about starting a collection of them too. They are quite inexpensive but at the time I couldn't find much about them and was curious, as you are, the date range of them.
