I'm putting together a type set of Great Britain coins and it seems that there are just no 4 pence coins for sale on ebay except the 1848 type coins. Is it just me or have others found this to. Are there other good sources for these coins or are they just plain nearly impossible to get. I'm wondering if I should drop them from the set other then the nice 1848 that I already have.

Thanks

Britannia four pence are available from 1838 to around 1856? There was also a Jubilee head issued a year late in 1888. Chances are that they will cost the same as a Maundy four pence.

They''re certainly out there. I own five English/British 4 pence coins, and I'm not really trying for a complete set: 1683, 1709, 1836, 1840 and 1854; I also have three earlier, undated ones.

I think 4 pence (groat) coins were used mainly in the colonies. Therefore, they are more abundant in Australia, US, Canada and else. Everytiem I am in London, I check dealers for a good 4-Pence coin but either they are too overpriced or they are simply silver junk. I wonder if that's the same in the States , Australia or Canada.

You just have to keep an eye out for them. I've managed to collect all of them after George III. I still need 2 of the 3 for George III. I have found none for George II, and have just acquired a 1717 for George I.
