I had some coins arrive today and a few of them struck me as ones I really like.

1887 Half Crown - I love this coin and the scans don't show the toning as it really is. The toning is a violet color with the silver shinning threw and it has loads of eye appeal.

1817 Shilling - This coin is different in that it is very dark and when looked at in the bright like is almost a red wine color.

1754 Farthing - This is my oldest coin in me Great Britain set and I usually don't buy this grade of coin but for some reason I really like it and it wears well.

lovely examples, each of them.
There were two half-crowns in 1887: YH and JH.
The Great Recoinage began in 1816, and the shilling remained the same weight & diameter until decimal currency was introduced.
Good pics, too. Which camera did you use ?

I wish we still used these today. Now, our new designs are interesting, but no where near as beautiful as the Victorian era examples.

Could just be the photo, but the 1817 shilling looks weakly struck, and made of a brassy material? There were many contemporary counterfeits of shillings made at this time. It would still be an interesting piece

I used a scanner to make the images and it's a Epson Perfection 4400 Photo scanner my Girlfriend bought me for Christmas the a year ago. I do a lot of digital photography and I use the scanner for a lot of that work.

Victorian coins are some of my favourites - as my name clearly suggests! Very nice coins.
