I found a 1966 Roosevelt dime that has the copper core missing all the way around the edge of it. Both the obverse and reverse sides have a checkered finish all over, with the most on the deeper surfaces. All of the details on both sides seem to be sharp enough. Has anyone heard of this before? Could someone have put the dime in something that ate part of the copper core away? Could this be an error coin?

You must have typed the date wrong. I don't believe there was a Denver mint mark on a dime in 1966?

Hard to tell what is going on without seeing pics but it sounds like a damaged coin from your description

It a 1966, not 1966D. Can anyone tell me how to get good pictures of coins? I tried but could not get the pictures to come out good enough to post.

I take it you mean the copper center does not extend out as far as the coppernickel layers and the coin looks like it has a groove all the way around the edge. If that is the case and extended soak in a mild acid such as vinegar can cause that. The copper is more reactive than the coppernickel and so the copper center gets eaten away faster leaving the groove.
