The following collection of US-Silver dollars will be offered later this month at an auction overseas. According to the auctioneer, Coin condition is from VF+ to proof, with a conservative average of about AU58.The coins are not graded by a TPG and authenticity is guaranteed by the auction house. The collection is from a European collector's estate. A Complete collection of Morgan dollars and Peace dollars. Every year is apparently present with all mints. 1895 is proof. The rare dates of 1893 S and 1894 are included.these sample pictures are provided. Edited by hhbkiddo 02/05/2010 3:29 pm

According to the price guide in Coinage. The Morgan set is $9000 and the Peace set is $975. I don't believe those are for UNC condition.

Me either because the 34-S Peace dollar by itself in MS would cost more then $975

nod2003: You are correct. I'm not sure why some sets get an UNC or circulated price but not both.

Ummm, if an 1895 Proof is included you wouldn't be able to touch the set for less than $30,000 and if the proof is not impaired then you are looking at $50,000+

Maybe what I should do is , ask for close ups of the 1895 proof? may be worth it to do...
the auction starts at USD 9000 for the collection. there is also a 15% premium...

I would certainly want more information.
If someone went this far out of their way to collect the entire series, I would expect most of the coins to be MS (particularly the commons).
The coins depicted do not look "remained in the bank vault for 100 years" MS. And they all appear to uniformly "toned".
I remain suspicious.
It will be VERY interesting to see how high it goes.

this German auctioneer is beyond reproach with a stellar reputation. Any negative suggestions toward him are, based on my previous dealings with him, not warranted. I am basically not interested to bid on these coins, as I rather have Canadian coins. BUT if anyone is interested, please PM me and I will get you in touch.

Regardless of the veracity of the auction house, no approximation of the true value of this lot can be achieved without knowing the specific grade of each coin. Huge value changes between grades are quite common in the series. The mentioned 1893-S jumps roughly US$5000 in value from 45-50. This is definitely not a sight-unseen sale.
