I was at a coin show today and was rummaging through some Ike's looking to fill my book, the sign on the bin said 2 dollars each or 10 fro 18 bucks. While looking I found a Peace dollar and asked him if whatever was in the bin was 2 bucks, hes said yes. when I showed him the Peace dollar he said it was in there by mistake and thanked me for finding it for him. Should he have given it to me for 2 bucks? anyway I found a 71 S in there so it wasn't all bad.

MattDrew- Well, that was very honest of you to point it out. Some dealers will just laugh at their mistake and let you buy the coin as it is marked, but it sounds as though you did pretty well anyway.

The good will you created when you gave the Peace dollar back was worth a lot more than its intrinsic value. "Fair" doesn't enter into the situation.

It was nice of you to point that out to him. Just finding the Peace dollar in where it shouldn't be you know it's a mistake.

I think you did the right thing. Perhaps that dealer missed an opportunity to create a loyal customer by not selling it to you for $2, but you did the honest thing which goes a long way in my book!

I'm sure he would have caught it when you checked out. You should never expect to profit from some else's mistake.

I am pretty honest in general, in conversation when I was looking I asked him if he went through them, mostly wondering if I was going to find any 73's he said no the just buy them and dump them in the bin, so I think it was a stray like roll searching halves. I didn't even mention to him that I thought he should sell it for 2 bucks, but I think I would have if the situation was reversed. Maybe "fair" wasn't the right word to use.

You did the right thing & generated some good will, IMO the dealer should have reciprocated.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. It's not like you found anything rare or worth a ton of money. Some dealers would honor the price, some don't, that's just the way life is. You banked some good karma and maybe next time you'll score.
Feel good about yourself and your honesty and go on from there.

Good notch for you on the karma belt. Generally, in my humble opinion, good karma pays good dividends.

As everyone already noted you did the right thing and the dealer did the wrong thing. At a coin show I go to there is a dealer that has a so called junk box on his table and he purposely spikes that box with something a little on the more than junk stuff that is in there. He does a really big buisness so nothing big for him. He told me that about 90% of anyone that goes through that box shows the sort of expensive coin to him and asks about the one price for anything in there. He naturally says yes, and he thinks in general he just made a new customer. That dealer you mentioned that coin to should have really just gave it to you for that price.
