I recently purchased a '22 Peace dollar for my type set. When I bought it, I noticed it was mottled and just figured it was badly toned. That didn't matter the detail was good and well, I wanted it .

When I got it home and out of it's flip. I noticed it wasn't toning, it was something on the surface of the coin. The closest thing I can come to describing it is dried soup. I know at least part of it will come off because I tried with my finger on a small spot and it came up. I tried a soak (about 20 minutes) in hot water but nothing happened.

Any ideas on how to get this gunk off?
Rest in Peace

If you have an ultrasonic cleaner that might work. Whatever you do don't try any abrasive or physical means of removal. It'll jst damage the coin. A little more soaking might also help. It's your coin so the choices are yours.

If it is organic, acetone should remove it.

There are numerous threads on the forum about acetone and its uses. Check them out before you begin. Just make sure you are in a well ventilated area, use a container with a lid (it evaporates very fast) and remember it is quite flammable.

I wouldn't use an ultrasonic cleaner. The one time I tried that (on a circulated Indian cent) it left the coin with an unnaturally bright color that was worse than the cruddy original. I'd settle for a long soak in hot soapy water or else try the acetone route.

Def try some acetone. I usually soak mine in a closed jar for 10-20 minutes, then rinse with distilled water. If that doesn't get it then you might want to try ultrasonic cleaning.
