It'll be interesting to see just how nice this is when it gets here, but it looks to be very high grade (was glued in a christmas card from 1917) and looks like it could be a full head to boot. Nice round knee. I asked the seller about a mint mark, so I do know for certain that it's the Denver issue. This one was a real gamble. There was a picture of the reverse, but it was even worse than this one. Chance

A gamble all right, but that should come naturally to someone named Chance, right? I would have been tempted, also. The color is very attractive, hopefully the result of sitting unmolested in a keepsake drawer for 93 years. It may require a little acetone treatment to remove glue residue but maybe then you'll have a nice no-problem AU with full head. Please share your in-person photos after it arrives!

I'll post pics when it gets here....win, lose, or draw.
Fully struck type 2s are relatively tough to come by.

I can't make out anything from those pictures and definitely couldn't tell you it was a full head from what I see. All I can see is its tones. Can you tell me what you consider a "high grade"? the reason I ask is some people call a XF High grade and others (like me) call a MS-65 and above high grade

I think you will find an MS coin I believe I can make out the skirt line on the right leg which would limit it to AU, how you get the glue off without effecting the coin will be interesting.let us know when you get it even out of focus there is alot of detail...

wow very cool find. I love taking shots on such auctions, for the pure chance of tripping over a real gem at a great price. May I ask what you paid?

Oh, I would have had to take a shot at that.

For me...an upper AU would qualify as "high grade". My Dansco 7070 is nearly full of coins in the 55-63 range.
paid 103.00 and change for this piece. I have looked at lots of type 2 SLQs, and am pretty confident that what you see there is a full head. I admit it's a risk, but not all that huge a risk. I think things will turn out just fine, and will know in a few days time.

Looking at the Numismedias FMV prices for a 1917-D in AU 58, retail for that coin in 58 is just under 200 dollars. If it's a full head, that value jumps to a 336 dollars. Some coins don't sell for anything near published prices, while others will eclipse them. It depends on the piece, and who's looking, but even with the spotchy toning on the reverse after the glue removal, I'm confident that I didn't pay more than it's worth, though possibly every penny.

i actually contacted the seller because I wanted the coin, he said that the glue stain on the reverse is pretty significant, I asked if he could see the drap over liberty's knee and if all the toes were visible and he said yes so I imagine it is in AU. I was gonna snipe it out but, I had my eye on another type 2 17 which ends in an hour or so. I think you got a great buy, you got it for less then what I expected it to go for and the color should be nice. post better pics when you get it.
