I know these pics are bad, but they are large enough you can see some detail.

Discovery!--1909-S-VDB

Found this is my late great-grandfather's coins... sitting in a beat up old 2x2 cardboard slab. It has two scratches just above the VDB. Can/should this be slabbed?

Wow!! Congratulations! I wonder when and how your great-grandfather got it, and how much he paid for it.

Yes. Have this coin authenticated and slabbed. I would go with PCGS personally. From your pictures, it's looks to be VG10 or so possibly Fine. Congrats! Rare coin.

Great find! Those are not what we call "scratches", those are simply "hits". Scratches are damage, hits are just normal wear. This coin should be slabbed.

Got both the VDB 1909-S and the 1916-D back from ANACS today... both altered mintmarks. Oh well, back to looking up Morgans and Mercuries.

In the meantime, what are some creative things to do with the fakes?

There are too many fakes even from back then.

bummer specksynder

I wonder how much it would sell for on ebay. With full disclosure as being a fake. I'm willing to bet that somebody out there would buy it, crack it open, and then try and sell it as a real one. If it were mine, I hang onto it. I have a very difficult time parting with any wheatie that I find.

Sorry to hear about your altered MM's! It happens all the time. There's millions of fakes out there.
