I think is a very good idea for the US Mint, and unfortunately how is now only for the qualified Mint appointed artists.

The Mint is trying to capitalize with their products, and coming out with less than desirable design on coins for a lot of the coins made in the past decade.

I am probably opening up a can of worm by saying that...

I just hope the coins show up in circulation. The 1st coin has not yet appeared and the mint is charging £1.99 plus shipping for the coin.

Any idea what this one looks like?

Well considering he is the first "teenager" and an 8 year old came before him, I'm not sure it is that impresive (oh who is being cynical today?), haha, but yeah, good for him. In theory his coin is coming out in March, with one every month thereafter (or is it April, and the Blue Peter 2009 one coming out in March? Something like 29 months to go before 2012 olympics)

a pic here, it looks okay, but it is going to be the theme of the coins, they are not going to be too abstract, just showing exactly what the sport looks like!! Up to 3 million will be struck, apparently! Not that bad a number!

The Royal Mint seems to be copying the Australians. We've had schoolchild-designed circulating coins since 2001.

Well, what has happened is that there are 29 coins, one Blue Peter (young kids who can cope with that program ;-p), one high school, and 27 from the general population. Apparently they all come out in september, or perhaps they come out once a month, might have to wait till August/September to find out who won the rest though!!

This is going to be the first coin - high jump - interesting design but I guess it wont be to all tastes.

Cool that the general public get some input though - wonder how they are deciding on the other 27? I cant remember (other than the Blue Peter) there being any press about how they will select a design.

Maybe this is how they are going to pay for the games! If they mint 30 billion of them it'll give us the £15 Billion we don't have to pay for the games.

We'd better win some medals as we are going to be paying for it for a long while after!
