Grease Filled Die is my guess...and only a guess it is.

More than likely caused by an overabraded die because the remaining detail is the deepest part of the die on the ponytail. A Grease Filled Die tends to create isolated and random weakness while over abrasion will create specific areas of weakness such as the nose on this Merc-

Yes, overabraded is more or less interchangeable with die polishing only to a more excessive extent. An overabraded die was the cause of the 3-legged Buffalo nickel(not that my Merc compares to that)

So then Bio. That means that just like your dime,there should have been a few struck that appear the same like the 3 legged buffalo correct?
