Unfortunately the page by page scans will have to wait until next week after my final coin arrives. The last piece to the puzzle was picking up a nice, brown 1909-S VDB.
Is it just me or is it surprisingly challenging to find a nice coin at a fair price? For higher priced coins I always check closed auction results from Heritage and
ebay to see what the market truly bears. Even with a mindset that I'm not trying to find a steal - that I simply want to pay fair market value - it's amazingly difficult to track one down.
"BIN" prices on
ebay are always ridiculously high, as are BIN prices on Heritage and David Lawrence. Online dealers range between moderately high to (more commonly) way overpriced.
I guess it would be ideal to find an auction coin with no reserve and a low starting price. But if you're looking for something specific you either need to be lucky or very patient.
In the end I bought this from
http://www.nfccoins.com/They are also a bit pricey on their 09-S VDB's. $1225 for a VF25 while many XF examples yield that price at auction. $1400 for a VF30, $1575 for an XF45, you get the idea.
Mine is a PCGS AU58 and it cost $1600. Closed auction prices show AU58 examples selling for about $1500 on the
high side. But I really liked this one and the S-VDB is the crown jewel coin of the
Lincoln Cent series. In the end I decided not to fuss too much about price and just buy the one that really caught my eye.
So here she is! I can't wait to crack it out and fill that hole.

I should have some scans of the complete set next week. Thank you everyone who shared advice and knowledge on many of my purchases that past couple years. This website has been invaluable to me as a collector.
