Hello All,

New to the forum and collecting in general, I have recently begun collecting with an inheritance from my uncle which includes some Morgan silver dollars. With the cursory information I was able to gather online so far the one that is most interesting to me is an 1878 Carson City which my uncle had labeled "UNC, 7 Tail Feathers". It has a few scratches but no wear, and other than a tarnish streak or two (which I won't clean!) has a bright silver finish.

My question is how much a coin like this is worth?

The coins have been in storage for 20+ years, I would include pics but my camera just won't get in close.

Thank you!

jman

, to the community.

If you can post a picture of the coin, that's really the only way we can tell it's condition and estimate value.

Nice to have you with us, jman. That's a familiar nick - perhaps we've crossed paths elsewhere on the Internet.

The first thing you need to know is that those streaks on the reverse may or may not prevent the coin from being considered "original," and achieving a grade from a respected third-party grader. Although the color is not unreasonable for silver oxidation, the pattern is a bit odd.

With that said, the coin certainly looks Uncirculated and a guesstimate (the best we could do without very accurate photographs) would be MS62 or 63. That would put its' value at or north of $250-ish if considered gradable, rather less if not.

Thanks SuperDave!

The streaks are from a paperclip that was across the envelope the coin was in.

Extremely cool. The envelope must have had a minor sulfur content, the substance which normally reacts to oxidize silver, and only the place where the envelope was actually forced against the coin toned. That's what I consider a very neat feature, but would likely be considered "artificial" by a grader.

Details appear to be MS-63, On the reverse there looks like some type of pitting in the field above and below IN GOD WE TRUST. That concerns me a little, I'm not sure what might have caused that. Dave any ideas on that?

I inherited roughly 100-120 Morgan silver dollars from my uncle, most of them in less than UNC condition. Anything I should keep my eye out for?

Thanks Again!

1893-D labeled "Fair" - This coin is labeled "D" but the mark looks more like an "O", more on the way.
