My brother is a rock nut. Last week he bought up an estate that had been in a home that went into foreclosure after the death of the owner. There was over 4000 pounds of mixed mine samples and agate's. In it was 3 ore slabs from the Big Bonanza mine! (part of the Comstock lode) So for everyone out there that ever wondered where all the silver came form here you are. The Bonanza Mine yielded around 53% silver and 47% gold....The largest concentration and the highest content of ore in the Comstock lode. You can see the gold stripes in the silver ore on the second photo. This rock slab is only a little under 1/4 in thick and is just a little bigger than my hand (It weight is 15.3 oz) omstock lode)

It was a great find, I bought them right up from my bother. I posted them just because you normally only see them in a museum.

If memory serves me correctly the Comstock started out as a gold mine and got played out. Than somebody realized all the crap they had been mucking out wes silver.

Yes you are correct. They had a blue gunk that had a lot of silver in it,many miners thought it was garbage. Out of all the mines less than 13% posted a profit, and only 5 had solid veins in them. Or so the history books state.

Some really great samples. I wonder why no one ever melted that all down? Back in those days not many were thinking about keeping rocks with Silver or Gold for the fun of it.

Well as of yesterday I now have about 35 pounds of different silver mine samples, all from the Virgina City area. The only thing that I can think of is many of the mines where traded on the San Francisco stock Exchange. Maybe the samples where for verification of ore content. They all have mine numbers on them, and they match the mine numbers on file.
