I know this has been discussed at length on this forum. I have a 1909 VDB (wish it had a S MM) in really good shape (could come close to AU RED) except for the some verdigris on the top half of the coin. What would you recomend I do with this coin? Is olive oil safe for copper coins? I know this coin isn't hugely valuable but its one of the better wheats I have in my collection and I dont want to ruin it.

Thanks,

AG

Check with BadThad. He (I believe) invented a solution called Verdi-Gone. He sold it a while back on this forum and I think it may now be available from Wizard Coin Supply, yep it is here is the link.

I have never used it so you may want to see what some of the members say about it before you decide. If you are still young you can go the way of olive oil. That will take months and even years depending on the severity of the problem.

Can you post a picture of the coin? I cannot recommend using VERDI-GONE™ on any valuable coin unless the user is very well-practiced in the art of conservation. This is NOT the coin to learn with. Based on your post, I assume you've never conserved a verdigris infected coin so I recommend you leave the job to the pros at NCS.

I am just learning to photograph coins. I can try but I cant guarantee good results.

To conserve it with NCS cost about what? Is that just the slabbing cost?

NCS is cheap, I think it's about $25/coin.

OK, I read your post too fast. I was thinking this was an S-VDB....DOH! The coin is not worth the cost of conservation. VERDI-GONE™ might be something to try since this coin is not valuable. Make sure you read the FAQ and instructions before buying.

Personally.....I'll take coins like this to the sink with hot water and my fingers. Sometimes you can get the verdigris right off (if it's not set-in) by rubbing between the fingers under hot water. That may sound harsh, but it really works well and generally leaves no trace of "cleaning".

I went ahead and started it in an olive oil bath. Going to let it sit a few weeks and see if it cleans some of the verdigris off. Then I will will try the hot water trick. Last resort I might try the verdi-gone. Thanks for the comments.
