I have one of these ... at least very similar ... haven't looked at it for a while, but it's either a 1983 or a 1982 ... I'll post a picture of it to your thread here tomorrow night. I don't have an adequate scale to weigh it ... I guess I should take it to the dealer to get the weight ... I was think it was a LMC without plating ...

I sold one of them about 4 weeks ago they are a dark silver if they only are zinc. This one in sunlight is gold tone, not the type that are just missing the copper coating. The one I sold weight was 2.46 grams. On yahoo they state that they are common and are worth 1.00. I come from the school of if they are common!! there will be 100 of them on E-Bay. I sold mine for 50.00 and there was a 1982 that had a buy it now for 99.00. I have seen 3 and still own 2 of them an 1982 and 1983 and they are staying in my collection.

2.92 grams?! WOW! This is one you need the experts to look at. Post it in the errors/varieties section.

TwoHawks, I'm stuck inside at night with poor lighting, so my photos are really bad ... the coin I have that appears almost silver in color is a 1982D ... shown in comparison to a 1992 (the only other 1982 LMC I own is an UNC in DANSCO) ... the photos don't do justice to the color of the 1982, and I need to have it weighed ... one photo w/flash

That one is a zinc with no plating. It will weigh in at around 2.42 to 2.44 grams. That is like the one I sold for 50.00. Well they are all Zinc they are softer and dent easily. The one I posted is just weird, as it is over weight not under and is a harder metal. I will go to the library and look up US made foreign coins again as I can not find my notes

The 82-D pictured lastly is a plated cent. You can see the orange peel effect on it. Probably zinc. Post mint.

If that 83 is an accurate 2.9 grams that leans toward copper. but ? Odd one.

I don't think the 82D is plated ... I think it's the light reflection from my lamp ... no sign of copper color peel/bleed through on naked eye, but I might be wrong. I need to take the cent to a dealer and have it weighed (I don't have scales)

The all zinc cent's are very soft, it is the copper clad that gives them a little hardness. The last one is a zinc only as the texture is a spot on match.

The 82 D is plated. The top coin in the thread is known as "brass" plated. it is not copper. It is a known error type. When the copper plating material was contaminated with zinc, the result was a brass plating rather than the pure copper plating. The colors can vary from bright yellow, to goldish, to greenish.
Some folks collect these and they have traded in the past for more than 25 dollars each. I'm not sure what they sell for today.
Do a search for brass plated cents.
Have Fun, Bill

Thanks that would explain the hardness. where any of them over plated giving them a higher weight?
