This coin has me baffled, I have seen plenty of cleaned bronze coins before but not with this effect. Any suggestions as to what it might be.

May be what people that collect US Lincoln cents refer to as a woody. It appears to have wood grain. http://cgi.ebay.com/1915-D-LINCOLN-...NE_W0QQitemZ310197639402QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item48393858ea

I collect variety and eror Pennies and have several examples of the same sort. I believe they are called a "Streaky Planchet" possibly from the metal not mixing thoroughly. The dark spots are where the coin is obviously toning. If this is not accurate maybe someone can correct it. Cheers.

It does look like wood grain doesn't it. Could this be from storage in a wooden box where the coin has been left for a very long time and toned? Some wood boxes may be stained or varnished which may outgas. I might be wrong, just a thought.

I'd go along with Qld Sandy on this one, looks like the metals weren't properly mixed, and parts are now toning.
