I just finished reading Susan Headley-About Coins column on Morgan dollars. http://coins.about.com/od/coinbuyin...n_d.htm?nl=1 I have been buying Morgans lately and was wondering if you all agree with her saying that I should only be buying MS-65 or better. I just don't want to be throwing money away by buying medium grades when I should be buying better grades. I just need some advice from people that have been in this hobby alot longer than me. Thanks, Wornslick

As they say in this hobby. Buy the highest grade that you can comfortably afford. There are some really nice coins in the Morgan series that really don't need to be 65's.VAM's for instance.

Quote: As they say in this hobby. Buy the highest grade that you can comfortably afford Yes, but I have also heard "buy the coin, not the slab" And "if your happy with the purchase it doesn't matter" I guess it boils down to, are you planning on selling them in the foreseeable future. If not and you re buying to collect and not for investment purposes. Buy what you can afford and what you would want in your collection.

It depends on why you want to start collecting Morgans. If you just want to collect a few choice specimens then I would agree. There are many common dates where you can buy an MS65 for about 150-200 bucks. If you are interested in developing a date set, you will be spending a lot of cash for MS65 pieces. I have been collecting Morgans for 8 years . I am trying to put together a date/mint set. I have virtually handpicked all of the coins I have put into it. I am only able to spend when I have some "hobby" money left over from my daily usual bills. My set ranges from XF45 to MS64.It is only about 2/3 complete. I don't know if I'll ever get that '93-s, '89cc, or '94-p for example which Vg's to Vf's are better than a thousand for a certified coin.

I bought my first Morgan at an estate auction for $15.00. It's an 1889-O and I had an expert look at it and he said that he would grade it XF40, and that I got a good deal on the price. I was happy with it.

Not sure you'll find something for around $10 unless someone was willing to sacrafice one for you. Most Morgans I've seen in my browsing start at around $25 - $30.
If I should happen across something less than that, what is the most you would be willing to spend?

I would not listen to the only buy MS-65 or higher coins. I mean some of the coins start adding commas when you go up in grades. I dont look at my morgans as investment anyway

Wornslick,
Nothing more beautiful than a white, cartwheeling, well struck, Morgan. (IMO) First I'll say most of the coins I own I purchased more than 20 ys. ago. I have noticed very little gain on the lower grade coins, much better with quality coins.
Back then, I would buy 5 of the same coin (not talking Morgans) rather than settle for one of lower quality. And I still enjoy looking at all my coins.
Buy the best you can afford, you'll be glad you did when you look at it 100's of times in the future.
