My dad was a US Navy man 20-years and came home with a lot of coins from around the world, mostly Europe. They've been sitting in a box for years, and I don't collect coins.

I imagine most of them aren't acceptable tender in their respective countries, so I can't spend them. I hate to have them go unused if someone else can enjoy them. I've thought about donating them to the Boy Scouts to help them earn their coin collecting badge.

Late 60s and early 70s Ireland, France, GB, Germany, Nederland, Philippines, Peru, Panama, etc. The price guide indicate not much value in these coins.

Any thoughts of what I can do with these coins?

Start collecting!! You never know, you might like it. Or give it to the scouts, I would wonder whether many of the kids would care that much, but you might just make some kid's day!! Or you might have something worth something, might be worth writing here what you have and see if anything is worthy!

If you decide you really want to unload them, I do recommend you work with one of the collectors on this forum who are interested in foreign coins. You'll get much closer to their market value from one of us than you will from coin dealers here in the US, for most of whom non-US coins are largely a non-starter.

My areas of interest are French & German; why don't you post a list here of what you have?

I used to collect coins when I was a kid. And baseball cards, stamps, LPs, etc. Many a days spent getting rolls of pennies from the bank hoping for that elusive 1909 S-VDB.

When I was 20, (I'm 42 now), things changed. I went to a baseball card show and two events skewed my interest in collecting: 1) Two ten-year-olds were speculating in rookie cards and 2) A guy was haggling with a dealer about the condition of a $20 baseball card. The guy thought one of the edges was a little rounded and should have been graded lower. The dealer looked closer at the card, agreed with the man, took the card out of the plastic sheet, ripped it in half and threw it on the floor. Just to be a dick. I walked away from baseball cards that day and waned interest in the other collectibles soon after.

I still enjoy coins. There are some great designs out there. I just lost any desire to store them, protect them, or fill out those nutty coin books.

Anyway, for what it's worth: Just a few:

Bundesrepublik Deutschland
1P - 1976
2P - '67, '69', '73
5P - 1949
10P - '50, '78
2DMark - 1972

France 20 centimes - 1979

Eire
5P - '70, '75
10P - '69, '75
1 Shilling - '62, '64
50 P - '70, '71

All fair to good condition.

Thanks for your replies, all.

Yes, the Scouts do have a badge for coin collecting- and generally if there are any coin shows in your local area they will put on a workshop just for the scouts to complete the requirements for that badge.

If you live in an area where there is at least one coin collecting club, you may also want to call them and consider donating your coins for the purpose of supporting that workshop. Most clubs are always ecstatic to have assistance in that department.
