Haven't posted in a while, not much money for buying coins right now... however, my father in law put together a bunch of coins for me (he just sold a lot of his collection) that included these:

I remember that although we thought they were large and cumbersome to use, people also liked them. They were not like the modern dollar coins that a lot of people had not seen. in other words I never remember a questioned look when handing them to a cashier.
But hte US was in an era just two years after the moon landing. It was a time when people were still proud of American Exceptionalism. Ike, was still someone who was remembered as "not long ago" by people, and for this reason people seemed to think of these coins as something special. They also were not seen as an attempt to get rid of bills - just supplement them.
