This thread has 66 pages, over 990 posts, and has been on the forum over two years. I wonder if I've already posted on this. Probably.

Hi:

I was just looking for FEVs on ebay. I noticed two that didn't seem to show the reentry vehicle's con-trail. Is this common?

Jim- that detail gets washed out in mid and late die state coins. you have to find an early die state piece to get that detail.

I got mine from a guy on ebay who was breaking up a roll of them. Apparently they were all relatively EDS (which I guess is not common for friendly eagles generally). It's only about MS63 or so, but that's great for my purposes.

Unfortunately, I think he's sold out.

Last Saturday or Sunday I saw an FEV with the contrail on ebay by one of the CC listed ebay dealers. Unfortunately I didn't get in a bid and overlooked noting the sellers ID.

That 1977-D looks more like an MS65 at best, with the scratches and hit marks...how did it ever get a 66, and a CAC grade really stumps me...maybe someone can explain the thinking on this.
Here's my newest bank roll find 1971-D.

I was thinking MS64. Don't ever crack it out!

cc99999..I'm curious how you feel about Anacs & Ike grading these days...are they still spot-on? Seems like most Ike junkies trust them over anybody else for grading....I have a handful of Ikes I want to send in...just wanted your opinion...I assume J. Roberts is still their senior Ike man?

Mr. Roberts is still the Ike guy at ANACS. Personally, I think that it would be good for the hobby to see CAC expand their coverage to ICG and ANACS holders- because CAC is judging the grade not the marketing behind the grade.

In my experience, more ICG holdered Ikes cross than ANACS and NGC. Having said that, good luck getting any type of premium on Ikes not in PCGS plastic. PCGS basically maintains hegemony on the series because you can't use other company's holders on your PCGS registry sets. As for grading, all of the companies can be wildly inconsistent and I own coins in PCGS holders that are undergraded. I even have gold CAC stickers to prove it. And, we all know that they overgrade quite a bit when it comes to Ikes... especially, it seems in the MS-64 to MS-66 spectrum... and in the early years.

Rob Ezerman and I are laying out our book, GradeView- which I mention in my article in this month's Numismatist magazine. We are planning on including NGC, PCGS, and ANACS coins at this time... and this is solely based on what is available to us. The only ICG coin I have access to that's noteworthy is a 1972 Type 2 in MS-67. I know that coin did not cross at 67. is it one or two points overgraded? the owner does not want to find out.
