Here is a another coin I picked up for my US Type set What do you think of the grade?

I'm thinking VF, but I am very new at grading, so please help me understand.

Thanks for the help

The word WE in the motto is a big factor when grading this series, because the letter E is worn away. I would grade this coin at F-15.

Typically the "We" has to be clear in order to obtain a VF grade. I also think there is a little too much wear on the shield. I think you have a 2 cent that grades Fine.

There are some 2 cent enthusiasts on here that I am sure will chime in.

Nice coin.

The reverse looks like a solid VF but I agree with the other posts that the obverse is F or F+.

VF20 would be the liberal grade and with the sharp reverse, it deserves it.

May I play too?
Don't know how I missed this thread.
There are weak strike versions of the 1864 and also filled dies where the We is very weak or obscured. This is not one. Its a fairly early and clean strike (The Serif on the D is complete). The general wear over the coin is consistent with the state of the We. So with that out of the way it becomes a fairly simple coin to grade. The Obverse is Pretty much the classic F12 but that being said the New ANA grading standards and the less strict TPGs would probably put it F15 to VF20 In my mind the E would need to be stronger and the arrows would have to have some relief and not be flat to make int higher than F12.
The Rev almost always fairs better than the obv. A product of the design. You have separation of all the grains and the ribbon So VF20 is not unwarranted also not unexpected based on the OBV. Generally however the OBV carries more weight. So F15 would be my call
