I broke open a U.S.Mint set from 1962 and it looks as though the half dollar is a proof. Is this possible? If so, how could it happen?

What do the bell lines look like? If they are weak, it is certainly a business strike.

They are very strong but not overly so. I am not very happy with ANACS.I will be getting my 25 coins back from them tomorrow and they have listed in the email that they sent me that the half was graded PF67 and I am the one who cut it out of a 1962 mint set myself. I really am wondering if they even know what they are doing Bio.

Ooo, ANACS graded it PF-67? I am certainly interested in seeing this coin now I guess you didn't happen to take any pics before you sent it in did you?

No I didn't but I will have some pics tomorrow. I will probably crack it out anyway. It is a beautiful coin, not cameo obviously but flawless in my opinion.I couldn't find a bag mark at all. One of the reasons I broke it free from the mint packaging.

Interesting. Don't know if I'd crack it out so quick...what if it really should be MS67? If you could get that thing into an NGC or PCGS holder at that grade, or MS66, it would be fantastic!

I agree with that.I am considering calling ANACS when I get them tomorrow and having a chat with someone.

Remember that during this time the proof coins packaging looks the same as the uncirculated coins packaging......

May have been a proof-like coin also.

It most definitely said Mint Set not Proof Set as I had 3 sets from 62 that I freed from the plastic and this was the nicest of the 3 halves.

Halfwitty Look at the eagle on the reverse. If it is a proof coin there should be three distinct feathers to the left of the eagles perch(type II). The circulation strikes for this year had four feathers to the left of the perch(type I). There are some varieties of this known for 58 and 59 (proof reverse on circ strike) but I do not know of any for 62.

Most people don't know about it and it is pretty easy to cherry pick the 58 and 59 circs with the proof reverse. I do it on e-bay alot, the down side is since not many people are familiar with this variety it is hard to get attributed and carries very little premium yet. If you are not sure when you get the coin back post a pic of the eagle and I can tell you.
