I am not used to grading these in anything about XF, so I need some assistance. All four diamonds are visible, but I cannot get a good pic because my scope bulb is out So... what do you think this would grade at?

I'm with you on the XF Grading levels. I can't imagine that this coin would be an AU, but I have a few that are, so anything can happen. The LIBERTY is very well defined. Even though the color is strange, it does not appear to be too heavily worn. What color is it really? If the color is what it should be then AU.
ps jdheyne: I do love my 97!!
Metalman - comments?

Actually I thought this to be a solid UNC. I am playing around with a new camera so pics may be... well not the best. The color you see is the actual color.
I'm glad you liked that 97. It's a neat error/variety.

If that's the true color (and it hasn't been cleaned) and you don't see any heavy wear areas/marks then UNC is probably right on.
What's the price? The site no longer has the photo or info.
She is a beautiful coin jd! The rim is a real eye catcher! There's not a lot of Indians with the pronounced rim or color that I've found here in the East Valley anyway.

Could you tell me what or where are the "diamonds" on this coin? I'm not familiar with the term. Thanks

Hi Toast the diamonds are on the ribbon, follow from the Liberty down and you will see them.
Jd I'm going to say the coin grades MS-63 RD ,,it is the obverse of the coin which I see as holding the coin back from a 64,, the cheek appears to either have some album rub or chatter on the cheek, chin and neck , I cant tell for sure what it is but I would rather be conservative based on the pic.

What about the mark in the middle of the shield? Is that just a spec of dirt, or something else?

I wish that I had Metalman's grading skills in my pocket. Once coins get into the Unc/AU/MS categories I get completely lost. Yes, I have a grading book - wish it was in living color! I know - practice, practice, practice. But, for now I'm watching and studying Metalman's views. I'm watching others skills too ofcourse but, he knows his cents and I value his opinion(s).

I am exactly the opposite, as soon as it gets into the circulated grades I am lost and without a clue, I guess its because I only have MS coins and thats what I usually judge other coins by

I have both and I'm still confused. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one!
