The "I" in DEI on the NSF is not only flared, but clearly points between two denticles. The much more common 1955 SF type has nearly straight-sided "I"s, and the I in DEI points almost directly at a denticle.

Looking at the actual shoulder strap can be used to identify coins as well, but as soon as the coins have any circulation wear, it becomes very difficult. 1955 NSF's are very, very rarely seen in uncirculated grades, but the 1953 may be found in UNC grades with and without the SF a little more readily.

Troy, your picture is good but a little misleading as you picked the 5c SF variety
for the pictures. Unlike the cent, the "I" on the SF 5c does not point to a denticle.

Here's a direct one cent side-by-side, NSF on the left, SF on the right.

1cent, It took a second look to see what you are showing. In case anyone hasn't seen it yet, look at the pictures, and at the "I" in DEI. TThey are markwed, and are reasonably clear.
I use a USB camera, that has a TV out and this goves me a large image of what is being viewed. I mark the outline on the TV screen, and then compare the coins with the ones used. It makes a good way of determining which is whick. The paint comes off with Acetone.
Hope this helps....
