If gas bubbles trapped between the plating and the zinc?
And if so if there was a bubble or scratch and it went under the lettering and across the surface would this tend to be one or the other?
And also are all scratches in the same place on every like coin?

The plating occurs before the strike. What do you mean by "under the lettering"?

Any marks or scratches on a die will show on all coins struck by that die. Some marks (die polish marks, for example) are only on the "flat" (non-recessed part of the die). Those marks will not appear on the relief (raised) portions of the coin.

Steve, Thank's In other words if it is a die scratch it will be on the relief portion also. If it isn't on the relief it is not a scratch

No, a die scratch can skip over the relief (raised) portions of the coin.

Imagine pressing a coin into a flat piece of clay, to make a representation of a die. If the scratch on the die is only on the highest part of the clay, the scratch won't appear in relief on the coin.
