One more time for me: RDV 005 is supposed to be on 1988. If it is RDV 006 and on a 1989, it is the sought after 1988-D. That makes the normal 1989 the G with the Hook and tail, right? So what, then, if the 1989 has the reverse of the 1988 and it is missing the hook and tail? Som descriptions say this is due to polishing and die abrasion, and the die markers are the die gouges around the G in the designer's initials. I have scads of 1989 P cents, and just this one cent has a different reverse. If the G has that hook thing, then it is a 1989 reverse? But I have a 1989 that looks to be the normal 1988. Odd thing. If I have time tonight, I will take pics and let you decide which reverse of the few shown is the 1989. Otherwise it'll wait till tomorrow.

Every '89 example I have seen with what appears to be an '88 reverse has turned out to be over-abraded dies. The polishing is heavy around the initials and just happened to have filed away the hook things.

Thanks Scooby, I see filing on my example, too. That's gotta be it. My 1989s have the regular or the polished away features. Will get a better loop now. Mt glasses don't help anymore.

So the die varieties are on both the 88P and 88D?

Thanks for the better info...if only I read this before searching yesterday...I didn't bother with the 88-D. Did run past a few 88P and D in $65.

I thought I found a nice one today. A very nice looking 88D. When I flipped it over I couldn't see the FG. I put it aside until I was done with my searches today. I had to crack out the higher loupe. Then I could see a faint outline of both the F and the G. Got me going, though. I didn't notice any signs of wear on the reverse. Just the initials were missing...at first.
