I don't know if this has been asked in the past or not, maybe it already exists and I haven't found it yet.

I think a wiki dedicated to coins would be a good place to collect information about every coin out there and a good resource for others to learn. Several categories could be setup - country, type (currency or collection), etc. Images, history / story behind each coin, variations, sources, etc. could all be added for each coin to make it easier to find information rather than searching through forums.

I've browsed the web looking for a coin wiki to read / update myself but I haven't found any that are actively being used.

I'd be willing to put in as much information as I can into it, I'm sure others would be as well.

Any thoughts on this?

The only usefulness it could provide would be for identification and history. As far as coin related topics there is just too much diversity of opinions regarding cleaning, preservation, grades, pricing, authentication, errors, etc.

What we have here is much better then wiki because we can all come together and share our collective knowledge with one another rather then just google it for some half truths and misleading information.

Grading, pricing, etc. will always be topics to discuss because there really isn't a true answer. There are things that the wiki won't help and that's a few of them.

The wiki would be good for identifying a coin as you say but also showing facts about a coin, things that can't really can't be argued. For example, I bought a coin from the Perth Mint in 2000... but I don't know what the gold % of the coin is or mintage.

I just think it would be easier to have a wiki then to read the same questions over and over in the forums like "what are all of the different quarters that were put out between year ____ and ____ ".

The problem with Wikis is that they are extremely high maintenance. Once it gets in the search engines, the amount of spam is enormous. People write scripts to spam them.

I know.. I used to run a couple of them (mediawiki) but I think it got patched with the newer versions to stop the spam bots. I used an RSS reader to watch the "recent changes" and would catch the spam fairly quickly. Promote a few members with delete and ban privileges in the wiki and you've got more helpers to help keep it clean. :)

If you're asking me then yes, everyone would help. Perhaps extend the 50 post restriction requirement to include modifying wiki pages to help prevent spammers but the idea behind a wiki is that everyone puts the data in.
