I have a small amount of coins (probably 4-6 coins) that I would like to have graded/slabbed by PCGS. I do not have a membership or anything and I was curious as to what the options are. I have a dealer who is affiliated with PCGS in my town also. I know the cost per coin will depend on the value etc, but I just wanted some opinions as to the choices. Should I get a membership for a year and get submissions that way? Membership fees? Free submissions? Any restrictions?

Or should I go through my coin dealer who is affiliated with PCGS? Am I paying a significant amount more doing it this way?

Please let me know of the different pros and cons and possible costs associated with doing it either way. Thanks.

(by the way I am only looking at PCGS because all of my other slabbed coins are PCGS and although I might be able to get some better delas, I want to stay with PCGS right now.)

if you only have a few to be graded then I would probably just go the dealer route myself. If you think you will have 20 or so in that year that needs grading then the membership may pay for itself. As far as the value of the coins well that is just an estimate on what you feel they are worth when sending so if they get lost that is what you will get reimbursed, it doesn't mean the value once they are graded and your dealer should be able to tell you how much to insure them for if they send them in for you. The dealer should also be able to let you know if the coins are actually worth the slabbing fees also because some coins even though may be nice looking their value sometimes just doesn't justify the grading fees. I usually say if the coin isn't worth at least $100.00 then I can't justify the grading fees

Thanks bryan. What sort of grading fees are we talking? I know they vary but for a coin that is valued around $100-$200 versus a coin that is $500-$600, any ballpark idea? Just an estimate would help with the planning. What should I expect the dealer to charge (above the actual PCGS and insurance fees? Thanks for the help.

All of this information is freely available at PCGS' website:

I would not expect a local dealer to add very much onto the price, especially if you're a regular customer. Your share of the shipping/insurance and a couple of bucks to be polite, if you know each other.
