In 2008 I inherited a fairly substantial coin collection from my grandfather as I was the only grandchild of his who had ever taken interest in coin collecting. I've been sorting through it over the past few years and today's project was to determine exactly what 25 cent coins I am missing so I can continue building the collection. I came across this coin, which according to the 2010 Charlton... isn't supposed to exist.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Much appreciated!

I have 2010 Charlton in front of me.
This coin (Q2 variety, judging by the picture) does exist on page 138. It is the Q1 version where "None are known to exist"

Looks like a Q2 to me. "A pointed neckline pointing to the right of the serif on the letter C"

Nice shape though so still a great coin.

this is definitely NOT Q1..
Q1 has a rounded neckline and points clearly to left of the serif on the letter C.

Ah see I thought Q1 was talking about the reverse. I'm pretty positive this is a RQ1 but I've been wrong before. I guess that's not what makes this a rare coin though.

Well it's been in the collection for a while. He stopped collecting in the 1970's for the most part so unless a fake could possibly be at least that old I'd say it's definitely legit. It's hard to say if a replica could have made its way to him anyway, having never used a computer and living deep out in the country.

You should see what it has sold for in 2005 on Heritage Auctions. It says 1872, not 92 right? I guess it depends who's buying. This one doesn't look in better condition than yours to me. I'd investigate further.
