Just did my first $250 box. I guess getting two mercs in 20 rolls, as I did last time, will encourage one to go for more rolls.

I got this one and a very banged up 1952:

Dime-Roll-Searching

One roll was three coins short and another one coin. No rolls were long. That is irritating. I expect better from the Fed.

im getting back on the horse again so-to-speak.. your not hitting my banks up here in north county are you?

im gonna have to start ordering boxes again. my credit union just doesn't carry the volume id like. there is one chase branch however, the one where I lost that $100 at, if you remember. I havent been back since. but I'm starting to just get over things and maybe head back there. they usually had at least $1000 in dimes most days.

I have been searching mostly halves with an occasional box of nickels. I'm thinking about trying my luck with a box of dimes. Aside from the silver, what else should I be looking for? I have searched customer wrapped dimes before and had a little bit of trouble with eye strain. I hope I can make it through a whole box.

A couple years ago, I picked up a 12-box order of dimes and searched non-stop (about 6 hours). I use an old pair of bi-focals work great! Or, you can buy drug store magnifying glasses, or reading glasses are ok. BTW, that 12 box order gave up 6 Barber dimes, 8 mercs, and about 15 rosies.

Has anyone had problems using coin counters to dump their dimes? I have heard about problems with dimes falling through the penny holes and being counted as pennies instead of dimes. Is this true? Would it be better to wrap the dimes?

Thanks fistfulladirt,
I work in the Optical Industry and make my own glasses. I am currently wearing about a +1.75 reading lens. I'm thinking about making a stronger pair just for searching dimes. Have you ever used one of those big magnifying rings with a light?

Happens to me at times. Not a problem as long as the teller knows you are dumping strictly dimes...get the receipt from the machine, it will show dimes counted as cents. When that happens, the bank credits my acct. I re-roll a lot now, and I don't count or weigh. Never had a problem YET. I was dumping loose dimes in $500 bags directly to the vault and received instant cash. I don't do that as often now.

I have Murphy, but not for roll hunting. Back in the 1990's I worked for a defense contractor, we built sonobuoys for the US Navy. I was lead electronic tech for an engineering team and I did a lot of prototype soldering of microchips and micro components under those magnifying rings. Bet one would work great for roll hunting.
