I have a 1776-1976 Kennedy half that is a gold color. I can't find out anything about it. Is it toning? - fungus? - something from outer space?

It's probably one of two things, natural toning or gold plating but without a photo we can't help you much.

Hope this helps. In the enlarged photo's I can see things I didn't see with the necked eye and it leads me to believe it is toning but I am just guessing and uneducated guessing at that.

From those photos, it appears to have been plated or coated.

I base this on the edge because I am not seeing any contrast between the Cu-Ni faces and the copper core. If it were toning, I would still expect to see this contrast on the edge.

It also appears to be wearing off in places.

A-OK Thanks for looking. I wonder why it was plated and who done it. I thought the wearing off might have been where it hadn't toned yet. Strange but I have two of these.

There are many reasons it may have been done; fun, promotion, profit, etc.

It is a bicentennial coin, so it might have been part of a "special collector set" (like what you would find from the "home shopping" crowd today) that was eventually broken apart and spent (since those sets, not being official mint products, have little value over face).

Hey, it may not be worth much more than face but its a cool looking piece. I find myself saving alot of little value stuff just because it looks nice.

Thanks everybody yeah I think it is cool and I will definitely keep it, for me that is what collecting is all about. If I was trying to get rich I would be in big trouble because I haven't made enough to pay for my first camera. LOL

Hmm ... I found a Bicentennial half a few months ago that sounds just like this (golden patina, no cladding visible). Here's the best photo I can get with my crude set-up. Believe me though--it looks like it's been coated. The edge looks just like the edge of a silver coin
I set it aside as a curiosity.
