Here are a couple new pics of the Half Dime. I am probably going to have to spring for a new digital camera. I messed around all afternoon getting these pictures, and they are still only a caricature of the coin. I can't get the thing to not appear splotchy. It's a great coin, with a cool die clash to boot. The new pics are those with the blue background. original post follows: I was smitten by this little beauty today and just wanted to share a picture. This looks like a very nice original coin. It's impossible to tell all that much about it from these pictures, but I thought it was worth a closer look. It just came out of a collection that hasn't seen the light of day for over 40 years. It was listed on ebay....as being in "VG" condition. The price wasn't in line with that assignment of grade at 125.00, but I don't think I'll be hurt on this coin. It bumps my 1831 from the Dansco 7070. Chance Edited by Chancellor Sutler 03/04/2010 4:03 pm

I knew that VG was nowhere in the picture....and I actually probably saved this coin from being scrubbed and polished. I had already bought one Seated half dime from the same seller, and told him that had another not been cleaned, I'd have bought it. I asked if he had any others that he'd be listing, he said he had a few more, including an 1832 that had been cleaned because he couldn't read the date on it...and a few others. I told him not to clean them, but list them as they were. He listed this one next and I nabbed it. Chance

Yeah Chance, keep your eyes out. It would have been a shame if this coin would have been cleaned. Many decades of original toning destroyed in minutes! Is amazing, well, more ignorance, that some people would clean these coins.

As few originals as there are, it would have bordered a "criminal act". to take the simichrome to this one. You ought to see the 1838 no drapery that he destroyed. It was also an AU coin with a heavy die clash. Nice coin...until the polishing compound came out.

Anybody who can help with attribution once it gets here and I take better pictures? I am building a type set, so it's just not going to be practical to buy every book out there, but the attribution interests me. Maybe when it gets here, it'll be even nicer than I imagine it to be from these pictures, and it'll be worth a trip to a TPG. I still haven't joined either NGC or PCGS. I figure that will change this year though. Chance

I've spent a great deal of time studying the different varieties of the 1829 Half Dime, and have come to the conclusion that this is LM-13.2 judging by the die cracks and clashes, and the re-cut 9 in the date. I was rather surprised to learn that this variety was minted after 1830 LM-1.1 The coin on the left in this image is an ex Jules Reiver piece, NCS unc details, improperly cleaned. I don't think my specimen has been cleaned, and am beginning to think it may be worthwhile to submit it to a top tier TPG. I found a great page for attribution help with this series, and wanted to share the link with those interested in these little jewels. It has a lot of linked pictures to Russ Logan's collection. http://rob.com/russ/collection/Chance

Thanks. There are lots of coin series' represented on that page, and while the images aren't huge, they may well be useful.
The 1822 half should arrive at Dominion tomorrow. The O-101 in Russ Logan's collection, which can be accessed from the link above, is very similar to mine in strike weakness.
