It came clean with no adverse affects that I can see with 10X. So I did the other few spots on the coin. Perfect again.

Ouick question to the ones in the know, I bought 2 Morgans, a 1902 and 1904, both VAMs with doubling of dates and profiles. What it didn't say was anything about die cracks. Both of these coins have die cracks around the wording "UNITED STATES". Does that change the value of the coins in any way?
Terry

Very likely not. Die cracks on Morgans are common enough that they generally do not add value unless they are advanced enough to become actual breaks or Cuds. I lack the time this morning (gotta work) to help with research, but if the question is still up tonight I'll have a go at it.

Die cracks in the perp seem to be pretty common on large coins. I have a bunch of peso crowns from Peru and it's almost a standard. When they harden dies the outer part of the die cools the fastest so it's more susceptible to a brittle perp and so die cracks. I'm not sure why it seems be so common on larger coins than smaller ones. Maybe it's just because larger coins require more striking pressure and so those dies will start to fail sooner. Some collectors really like them, I know I do. One of the Peru crowns I mentioned has 17 of them that I can see.

Terry, one other possibility is rust transfer from the die to make those spots, especially if you were able to easily remove them. Like everyone else, I wouldn't have minded seeing a larger image of the Morgan, but that may not be possible now. I wouldn't worry about its post-cleaning value since 1902-O's don't have a lot of value until they get into the MS-65 range and even at -65, the raw value is still less than $100. The only VAM of significance is the "micro-O" (VAM-3) which this is not; it might gain more significance to a VAM collector who doesn't yet have a VAM-26. In some cases, MUCH more if the collector wants it bad enough; ask Bryan how his VAM-81 search is coming...
