I just received a 1902-O MS-63 VAM 26 Morgan in the mail today and It has some what I could only describe as spots, discoloring, even chip like marks on the reverse. It actually looks like a silver plating has chipped off and its gold/light copper colored underneath.[:0] I know this isn't possible being .900 pure silver. Anyone else ever hear of or see this before. its kinda me out. Theres one fairly large one on the breast and another inside the loop of the R on dollar and a few scattered smaller ones.Zero marks on the obverse. Edited by TLS5933 06/18/2006 07:31 am

If the scratch is very deep it may just be a copper core.

As I am sure you probably would have expected someone would ask, can you provide a pic?

yeah a pic would be great, and coolg, its not the copper core and for you to say that means you need to study a morgan closely, we arent talking about a 1999 quarter here we are talking about a .900 pure silver dollar, which doesn't have a copper core

Rick, I know. I cant submit a larger picture because the site won't go larger. I want to try and clean whatever it is but I'm afraid to try anything because of the value of this coin. Maybe its not even cleanable.Thers also a die crack alomst all the way around the letters United States that the seller forgot to mention. Terry

hi TLS
If you have a Jwelers Loupe try taking the pic through that,, just of the area on the breast,, with a little practice the pics can look like they were taken with a microscope.

It kind a looks like copper spotting from a bad alloy mix. You see it sometimes on gold coins.

if you will send the original picture to melolover@gmail.com I will do the resizing of the picture and see if I can make it look a little better Does it look like the silver is flaking off in those spots or does it look like something is on the coin? Can you weight the coin to see how much it actually weighs

Bryan, Looking to a 10X loupe, it looks like something came off, I just can't tell. I will have to retake the picture. I messed with the picture so much trying to magnify it that I messed it up...lol

Well it finally bugged me enough to try a small cleaning project. I use a small amount of baking soda and water mix. I used a very pointed toothpick and lightly rubbed it into the loop of the "R". It came clean with no adverse affects that I can see with 10X. So I did the other few spots on the coin. Perfect again. Ouick question to the ones in the know, I bought 2 Morgans, a 1902 and 1904, both VAMs with doubling of dates and profiles. What it didn't say was anything about die cracks. Both of these coins have die cracks around the wording "UNITED STATES". Does that change the value of the coins in any way? Terry

It's possible with any mixed alloys.
