Does anyone know in what year the U.S. mint began providing UNC coins in clear plastic/cellophane/ or equivalent wrappers?

I'm trying to determine the validity of an 'uncirculated' coin that is supposed to be in a clear U.S. mint wrapper.

Thanks, kindly.

1955

In 1955 they switched from what they call the box to the flat pack, Flat cellophane.
They had both in 1955. I have never seen how the coins were wrapped in the box, but I have seen the boxes. I am pretty sure they were individual coins, not sure if was individual cellophane or some sort of tissue or paper wrapped coins.

Opps .. sorry .. when I reread that I saw you said UNC .. I was talking proof. as stated .. before .. 1959 for UNC

Before 1959 the Unc. coins were in cardboard holders that really messed up the coins if you left them. That is why pre-1959 sets have a much higher premium if in good shape.

I do collect mint/proof sets, I am thinking the first year for the cello wrappers was 1959 or 60, I am not sure and have them all in a safety deposit box.

I do believe it was the 59, just my opinion, with out seeing my sets, good luck, Mike...PS, What year coin are you talking about?

It was a 1918 Illinois Centennial. That said, the concern has been resolved.

Thanks for the input!
