Can't seem to find much on this piece. I'm l;eaning towards thinking it is a token.

It has a milled edge, made of silver, 6.65 grams and 25mm diameter.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

thankyou for sharing this very interesting piece.

Jeff, why do you say that this item is linked to the year 1837 ?

"Juicio por Jurados -
Law of 7 November 1874 establishes in Paraguay judicial proceedings with jury for all criminal proceedings, with some exceptions. It determines that there will be only one "Tribunal de Jurados" (Court of Juries) in the country, with seat in the capital city. It is comprised by citizens with qualifications stipulated in this Law. It regulates the creation of the Court of Juries, its functions, and appeal procedures, among other provisions. "

"El Pueblo Jues" - can't find anything for this.

Apologies to D23 - a mistranscription has crept into your reading of the reverse legend.

If it does have a date like "1837" on it somewhere (that's worn away and invisible in these photos) I suspect this may be a "proclamation piece". In Spain and the former Spanish colonies in the Americas, it was traditional for major public announcements (the coronation of a new monarch, proclamations of independence, promulgations of new laws, etc) to be publicised by the giving away of commemorative "coins" featuring the announced changes. These "proclamation pieces" were often the same size, weight and fineness as normal everyday coins, and frequently entered circulation, even though they were not usually issued by the central government. The silver used to manufacture them was usually donated by a wealthy landowner or official in the area where the proclamation took place.

Even though they strongly resemble coins (with milled edges and everything), as "unofficial coins", they're not listed in the coin catalogues - they are a curious blurring of the usually distinct line between "coin" and "medal".
