I notice in my Dansco they make provisions for the '60, '70, & '82 Lg and small dates, but not for '74.

And although they are all mega-common, they are a variety, no?

I have only found Lg and small dates for the P&D mints, are there both for the S as well?

I have never heard of lg and sm dates for the 74 lincoln. They did strike some aluminum 74's though and some in Bronze-clad steel.

They exist, although I'm not sure about the S.

Also, if you go to coppercoins, you'll see the identify all the doubled dies to type 1 & 2's.

Yes, they all three exist lg and sm.

The entire obverse was modified to swithch over to aluminum and this is the small date. They are all three quite common but only large dates exist in the mint sets so really nice small dates are elusive, especially for the S mint.

These are important, major, and historic varieties and it's remarkable they get so little attention. I set aside any unc S's I find and the others in chU or better.

Thanks cladking, I didn't know if I've been searching for a small date S or not. I only have 1 74S worth hanging on to, but it is the lg date. You would think they would allow slots for these in the albums (if nothing else to sell more pages!). How about any of the other albums? Whitman, etc. Are they in there?

Another coin ignored by collectors, goes along with the 1928-S small and large dates.

I was sorting my Lincolns into year piles and when I got to the '74's I noticed one was just "different". I could have swore there was a large and small date, but when you search the internet, you can't hardly find anything on it. I thought I was on to something! Then I found some obscure article talking about it (should have bookmarked it), but it said they were so common that nobody paid attention to them. But it started bugging me because I had one of each, but had to choose which one to put in my Dansco.

Then I went to coppercoins to see what known doubled dies exist - and there they had it. I had searched forever and could have found the answer in seconds.

BadThad, thanks for the heads up on the '28S, didn't know about that one!
