I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if different metals tone the same or different? Can silver coins and gold coins both produce the same blues and reds as each other or does it all depend on the chemical make-up of the coin?
Only if you make the toning yourself with paint. If you paint any coin with a good Rustoleum paint, regardless of the coin, they will all look the same. But to really answer your question, NO. All metals tone, tarnish, corrode, stain, etc differently. This is due to the Crystaline structures created by the combnining of substances with the metal of the coin are excessively various as well as the metals themselves. By this I mean Silver combining with Nitrates will appear differently than other Metals due to many reasons. Some are the temperatures, quantity of the the type of Nitrates, etc. To sum it up, almost any coin will tone differently than even a similar one pending many differnt situations.
The colors are determined by the thickness of the layers of the oxides, sulfides, sufates, chlorides etc on the coins, not so much the actual compositions.
