2008 Armistice
2009 Olympic quarters

Is it just me or do these tokens look cheap and easily defaceable? Some of these coins are terrible (in design) and look like jokes for money. I'm sad at these and also holographic coins and other gimmicks being used by RCM.

I'm not familiar with the coins your talking about but when it comes to colorized coins altogether I generally do not like them and believe they look tacky.

I'm not a big fan of those either. It does take away from the natural beauty of the metal.

Those 2002 coins are actually from 2009. The moment is from Canada's hockey win at 2002. Up close they look all square-ish and poorly designed IMHO. Maybe they should dye/spray them instead, but I'd rather these types be abandoned soon. The colour doesn't last long.

You are talking about two different types of coin -- some are circulation issues, and some are NIFC.

As for the NIFC stuff, to me it's just bullion with pretty pictures and is overpriced and gimmicky.

In regard to the stuff issued for circulation, it's a novelty, sure, but if it gets more people interested in collecting, I'm all for it. If it gets people interested in collecting Canadian coins, I an definitely all for it. The fact that the colour doesn't stand up in circulation only means that the uncirculated ones I've set aside are only going to go up in value, which I don't think is a bad thing.

I agree with Wpg.
Any circulation coin that encourages a second look from a non-collector or sparks an interest in the hobby is great stuff.
My only quibble with the Moments coloured coins is their totally banged up appearance. Beyond "bag marks"

Yes MrCanada the "Armistice"quarter was put into circulation in 2008.
it was double dated 1918-2008.I saved about a half dozen when they first came out.As far as "Souvenir" goes I don't know what it means.
French for "Remember" maybe? I don't know I don't speak French myself. Can someone else help here?

Well..........I found this antiquated topic while looking for something else. I read through it and it appears that colored coins weren't much of a 'hit' several years ago. I am very curious if the opinion is still the same or has the style gained any popularity?

As for myself, I recently have expanded my quarter sets to include ALL quarters made; including the basic circulated, colourised, painted, and decal coins. I highly like quite a few types, some are 'ok', and there are also some I don't like, but my plan is to 'get-em-all'!
My basic collecting has faded a bit lately since my want-list is down to coins that are well over $100 each in lower grades; so I'm finding that picking up some lower priced NCLT coinage helps my hunting active.

You forget important detail - the above coins meant for circulation.
They have simple design and touch of colour. In addition, the coins, that found in change, in 70% still have colour on them.

And also, Canada has some new beautiful editions - 2011 "park" coins (bison, eagle, orca), recent Canada flag and Remembrance quarters - all with some colored accent.

They all kept away, by collectors and people that just keep aside "unusual" coins.

Any other Mint able to do this?
(well Australian RAM has some very few colored circulation coins)

I remain more of a traditional collector and prefer coins that make use of highly-detailed engraved designs vs. coins that have colour painted on their flat surfaces.

My preferences aside, it is clear that the popularity of collecting colorized coins has increased greatly since 2010. Full-disclosure: I have several colourized coins in my modern NCLT collection.

The technology for painting colours on coins is much better today - and getting better all the time! - and some of the current RCM coins are, admittedly, quite attractive (the recent $20 silver Mountain Bluebird coin comes to mind).

Still, a finely-engraved unadorned coin whose design can stand on its own in gleaming silver or gold remains my preference.

The early colourized quarters (2000s) did not age well. You can find these in your change, but most of the colour will be worn off.

Like commems says, the more recent quarters (2010s) are quite popular and tend to get snapped up quickly.

Last year's flag and poppy quarters look outstanding; the color so 'rich'. True, some of the older circulated varieties look more like they were stained instead of painted, but I also think that the RCM has been upgrading the technic of late.

I finished re-typing my Canadian quarter want list, and the number needed has grown from 15 to 211, with 119 of them colourised types. I've already picked up several colourised coins this year (Canada Day, Christmas Day, NHL Hockey, birthday, wedding, congratulations, Olympic, Titanic, Coast Guard, etc) and am waiting for a few more in the mail.

I haven't yet started getting any of the 'bird' or 'duck' quarters, but I think those are wonderful too!
