I'm looking into buying a 1916D Mercury dime in G-4 Good - F-12 Fine. What is a good price to buy one? I am NOT going to rush into anything, and I am NOT going to buy an About good. Please respond. - coincrazed Edited by The return of Coincrazed 03/18/2010 11:30 am

Please make sure you purchase one slabbed by PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. This is one coin you do NOT want to buy raw. A certified G-4 will probably be $8-900 at the lowest, and an F-12 will be a couple grand.

Count your blessings if you can get into a PCGS G6 for less than $1000. Same applies at $2500 for a PCGS F12. It's my opinion that the lower end of the 1916-D market is insane, but that's just me.

I'm not going to get it THAT soon, maybe in a few months when I have enough silver coins to sell to get money to buy it. I'm not sure about getting one PCGS, because it'll be unbelievably expensive. I have a dealer that has one in G-4, and it's raw, and priced at $990, although he said he would let me have it for $900. He says he stands behind the coins he sells and says he recommends I send it in to PCGS, and if it's fake, he'd give me my money back. What do you guys think? Thank you for all the nice responses. - coincrazed

First if you do buy that one from the dealer, make sure you have in writing that you can return it if it's a fake.

I think you should buy one already slabbed at G4 for less than $950, and save yourself the hassle. Why doesn't he send it to be slabbed? You don't have to get one in PCGS plastic. ANACS or NGC is also perfect for this coin.

Good info here. I am also on the hunt for a 16D. All I have left is the 28D, 31D and 16D. The 31D I have is in real bad shape, damaged, scratched. It will not be very hard to find. My local dealer is looking for a slabbed 16D for me. The prices are crazy, but will be very cool to finish the set.

I am like, totally looking for a nice Good. No less. The reason I want to buy a raw coin and send it in myself is that all these grading companies have a habit of overstating the grade, for example, an About Good-3 magically turns into a Good-4, and the dealer will sell the coin for the price of the grade that the company put on it. That way, if PCGS pulls one of their little tricks and says my Good-4 that I bought is a Very Good-8, I'll have bought the coin for a Good-4 price. I want an investment grade coin. - coincrazed

You should be able to find one for about $10 or less. OH, you mean a real one? Now that is different. Be real carefull buying one of those. The 16D Mercury dime is amonst one of the most counterfeited coins. And some are so good, even many dealers can't tell them from real. A dealer I know that has been a dealer for about 40 or more years purchased a 16D Mercuy Dime raw but he said he knows what he is doing. He sent it for authenticating to a TPGS and it came back in a ody bag. He didn't believe that so he sent it to another TPGS. It came back slabbed and graded. It's stories like that one that makes me really worry about buying those types of coins.

I've taken 4 to the dealer in the last month... oddly, he thought they were all fake. More oddly, ANACS has agreed with him on every one. Crazy!
