Hi,
I picked up a few silver quarters for 10.4X face today. Is that a good price based silver being around $17.30 today? What are other people able to buy silver coin for?

The local big boys (dealers) are offering 11x for purchase. 10.4x is a good deal!
p.s. - you paid $2.60 per quarter/silver currently 16.98, so each .25 has $3.08 silver content.

Assuming that this is US silver coinage you are talking about. If Canadian, it is an ok deal, right at spot.

Great deal, U.S silver usually goes for around 12x face, depending on spot.

Decent deal except for one small problem. People constantly say a coin is worth this or that in Silver content. BUT exactly what are you going to do with that coin? Are you planning on selling it, melting it, storing it until the Silver value goes up even more? Many people run around saying what the Silver price of a coin is worth but unless you sell it for Silver, it really means nothing. Now in the near future if the Silver prices drop, then exactly what is your coin worth and again, only if you melt and/or sell it for Silver to someone that may actually melt it. I remember when people ran out an purchased almost any convertible auto since they were about to be stopped being manufactured in the late 70's. One auto dealer put many of the last Cadalac convertibles away since some day they would be worth millions. Then Chrysler started making them again. So guess what happened to the prices of convertible autos?

Anything below 12 X face I consider good. Silver halves are being snatched up repeatedly on Epay for over 13 X plus shipping, regardless of the spot price of silver. I just bought a small collection (not Epay) of walkers for 10 X, and a handfull of Peace dollars for $13 ea. Deals like that don't come every day, unless, of course, you are a dealer. I love the silver coins, also I hope they will be a good investment. Also, although they brought back the convertible, what's the chance of the US ever minting a silver coin (90%) for circulation again, it has been 45 years since the last.

I think you did OK. I my are 8-10x face is the norm for 90% silver. No matter where you go that is the price range for selling your stash at least. I have found no where local to buy.

I actually realized he gave them to me for 10X instead of 10.4X. To JustCarl's point, it's a hedge incase the world falls apart. I don't own a lot of silver, but I'm adding to it a little at a time. Also, a convertible is a lot more expensive than a lot more silver coins. Also the way I look at it is that if I can pay $3 for a cup of coffee from Starbucks, then $3 for a silver coin that lasts forever is not a bad deal even if it goes down in value!

I'm hoarding silver in the hopes that there will be a major price swing sometime in the near future. As far as a bartering tool, I don't think it will have much value. Far more valuble would be fresh water, food, tools, etc....now after an economic crash I feel PM's would be very important as the ecomomy rebuilds itself.

Hmmm.Fist, I do follow you but I would say that gold, silver will work just as well as it did in the old west.To add to the thread, 10x is the going rate.I have sold a few pounds of silver at that price and was pretty happy doing so.Just be careful with the others out there that try to take it from you for less and the ones that try to sell for more. Not including coin value of course.

Halfwitty, we had an economic crash in the old west? A handfull of silver will be worthless when McDonald's and Taco Bell have closed their doors. What good will my silver be to my neighbor when he's starving and has the only chicken around for miles?

I bought hundreds of dollars worth of Silver Franklins, Walking Liberty halves, Washington Qtrs, and '64 Kennedy halves a couple few months back. I offered 9x face value for all, and he accepted. We were both happy. (he sold the rest to a coin shop). And remember.....if "times" get bad..... you can't eat Silver. It's waaaaayyyyy too hard on the digestion ! ..... And likely as not, in those kinds of dark days..... thieves will take your "life", your "chicken" AND your "Silver" anyway !...... The "value" of bartering will have nothing whatsoever to do with Silver and Gold.....it will be dealt in "food"...ie..."chickens", cattle, pigs, sheep, vegetables, etc.......again....you can't eat money....and it would be worthless in that kind of situation !
