This coin has some excellent luster, but there are signs of wear on the hair and center band. I'd grade it at AU-55, but it could slide to AU-58 because of the luster.

David Lange's comment on 1939:

Quote:
The rarity of fully struck coins is emphasized by the low percentage of certified examples designated as FB. In all other respects, however, Mint State 1939(P) dimes typically are quite attractive coins.

There are very few marks on this nice coin...if it circulated it lived a sheltered life.

AU-58 or MS-66.

Very attractive coin, hard to tell however from the pictures if there are breaks in the luster on both the hair on the obv and the bands on the rev. If there are AU-58, if there aren't MS-65. I lean towards the 65 mark just because I've seen other coins of this quality without fully struck up middles.

IMO, the fields are just too perfect for this coin to have seen any circulation and detail weakness appears to be from strike and not wear. I would call it MS-65 with a shot at 66, and still a relatively inexpensive coin even in those gem grades.
